Musicade

Let’s have some fun with music. We reflect on current compositions and those from yesteryears. This is about introspection. We will be able to tell what is the decade or the time period from which the music is/was most appealing to us. There just might be one (or perhaps two). This is how we play –

We browse through a list of about 324 songs, and select a minimum 30 to 50 of them, which we would want to burn onto 3 or 4 CD’s to play during a road trip, or to make a playlist for some streaming service. The list is fairly randomized. We have a few songs from every decade starting from the 1950’s all the way to the 2020’s. They are identified by a title, the band/artist and starting lyrics. We click on the title to listen to the music on youtube, to make sure the song is identified correctly or just for our listening pleasure. Pick one of the links below to list the music. Enjoy!

Audience and Purpose

Music lovers

Enjoy the music. The data and the plots you generate will not be sent back to the server for data collection. If you feel strongly about certain songs that should have made to the list, let me know and I will include them. Just make sure they are available on youtube. Note that we do not download any music and run the risk of a copyright violation.

Statisticians

You see your selection as a histogram, and from there we can discuss if this is a multimodal or unimodal distribution. If the latter, we figure out the distribution. For me it is a gamma, perhaps due to the fact that I am biased towards the 1960’s and the 70’s. How would you account for this bias? Also, current longevity is estimated as 87 for men and 89 for women, so songs from the 1940’s or earlier decades may not be in the consciousness of those of us living.

Software Professionals

I am stepping out of my comfort zone here from the world of Java programming. No Eclipse as the IDE and a gradle/maven based build systems. Not using a servlet engine like Tomcat, either. In this utility, Python script parses a text file and generates the SQL to populate database tables. PHP scripts make database queries and Javascript functions collate the data and plot histograms on HTML5 canvas. These are steps away from the standard MVC paradigm. I’d be happy to discuss the architecture and the pros and cons of the decisions that went into this.

Web Designers

You can probably tell from these pages that web design is not my strong suit. I am trying out WordPress as the content management system, while learning what it can and cannot do. I could list my requirements, but I did not find a theme that covers them all. If you click on the link above, you can run a functional application and see my requirements, which are fairly basic in my opinion. What I am trying to figure out is how much of this functionality can be exercised with Javascript functions. I would be using PHP and CSS within the WordPress ecosystem. Hints and suggestions appreciated.
